Macworld Expo

Tuesday, 16 December 2008
Sticking with the Apple theme from yesterday, here's today's announcement (much more factual and significant than yesterday's was). Steve Jobs will not be giving the keynote address at Macworld Expo 2009 in January. Apple will not be exhibiting at the tradeshow at all starting in 2010. If you don't know, Macworld Expo, in the Moscone Center in San Francisco, is the largest tradeshow in the Macintosh world, and traditionally where Apple, through Steve Job's keynote address, announces new products and computers.

Personally, I find this rather disappointing, as, like any true Apple fan, Macworld Expo week is something I greatly enjoy. Although I've never actually been to the expo, I am usually glued to internet news sources (macworld.com, tuaw.com, macrumors.com, etc) for at least a few hours reading about new stuff. Last year, I ordered my MacBook Pro on keynote day of Macworld, because I knew if Apple hadn't updated the MacBook Pro line then, they wouldn't for a while. However, I think I understand why they will no longer be participating. Every year, no matter how good of a new computer or product they announce, Apple's stock goes down. If they announce what matches the rumors, it's boring. If they don't meet the (frequently unrealistic) rumors, it's a disappointment. It doesn't matter what they actually announce. They seem to do much better, at least in public perception, if they can just hold special events, as they have been doing this fall. All the same, I'll miss Steve Jobs' keynote address this year. Anyway, for some expert analysis of why Apple's dropping out of Macworld Expo in the future, see:
