Bleeding, red or swollen, and tender gums along with bad breath are the warning signs of the beginning of gum problems. There are a lot of questions surrounding oral health, so we at Trusted Health Products thought we'd break it down for you. There's actually one really simple reason why we all struggle with our oral health. It goes by the name of:

Bacteria

Even in a healthy mouth, one drop of saliva easily contains 50 to 100 million germs. A diseased mouth catapults this number into the billions. This is where the sugars you eat along with other bacteria forming foods have a heyday. And if you haven't been brushing, gargling and flossing like you should the bacteria growth results in the formation of plaque.

Plaque

When millions of bacteria get together they release a glue-like substance called plaque which likes to attach to your teeth. This sticky formation starts grabbing other germs, food particles, and minerals in the mouth, and in as little as one hour after brushing, you've started to form plaque!

Once these germs come in contact with your gum tissue, they release toxins that cause irritation and inflammation. This is when the battle begins. You may notice some slight swelling from the affected gum regions. Your gums react by releasing germ-fighters (good bacteria) to kill off the germs (bad bacteria). This results in millions of dead bacteria (both good and bad) littering the area. Unfortunately, the debris of this microscopic battle is caught by the sticky plaque, helping it grow.

In as little as eight hours after this onslaught begins, the portion of plaque that's still smashed up against your tooth, buried under the rest of the nearly-invisible stickiness, will begin to calcify. This new form is more commonly known as:

Tartar (Calculus)

Here's where it gets dangerous and your regular toothpaste and mouthwash are rendered ineffective. Tartar bonds much more aggressively than plaque to your teeth. It is very difficult to remove and makes it easier for plaque to continue to pile up on top of it. As this calcification spreads, it will eventually come in contact with your gum tissue and weaken your gum cells making them more fragile. This is the point when gums start to lose their tone and elasticity and will bleed during brushing or flossing. Bleeding gums is a major warning sign that something is wrong, but you if you're like most people you have never thought much about your gums bleeding. Now, bacteria have a new food source - blood and with the other food sources from your diet being catered right to their area it becomes an all-they-can-eat buffet.

Once bacteria have ridden the tartar wave down between and along your teeth and gums, they grow and form an opening between the tooth and gum line and hide down in that hole where they are protected from most forms of oral hygiene. This is when the disco ball kicks on and the bacteria really start partying it up. They have a plentiful food source and little interference from you and your typical, pesky hygiene products.

As the infection presses on, it reaches areas where there is still healthy gum tissue. Your gums react as they always do, but without your help below the gum line, the infection simply spreads faster than ever. Your condition just deteriorates from here.

Now maybe you can begin to understand with our fast food, sugar, and refined food diets are creating a bacteria bonanza in our mouths that even the best oral hygiene programs have a hard time overcoming.

Did our toothpaste and mouthwash let us down?

Yes they did and here's why!!!

Toothpaste is filled with chemicals. Probably one of the worst is an ingredient called Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS). It is used to foam up toothpaste to give the impression of cleaning. Unfortunately SLS is used the world over in clinical studies to irritate skin. It has also been used in car wash soaps and garage floor cleaners and is a harsh chemical.

A clinical study done in Olso, Norway by a dental surgeon said that he believe SLS weakens the mucosal lining in the mouth. Obviously putting a harsh chemical like SLS in your mouth twice a day over time could very well weaken the gum and mouth tissues. If you have a gum problem, the last thing you want to do is use a skin irritant on your gums. There are 6 potentially harmful ingredients in many of the leading toothpaste brands (see report).

Mouthwashes with alcohol are another problem. Alcohol use can create a condition called dry mouth which is just that a mouth that is dry and not moist. Dry mouth greatly accelerates bacteria production. It's a double edged sword; mouthwashes with alcohol kill bacteria but can lead to dry mouth that accelerates bacteria growth. Just the opposite of what you want to fight gum problems.
